Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; Gr. adj. phaeos, dark brown; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. n. kokkos a grain, berry), coccus; N.L. masc. n. Thiophaeococcus, brown sulfur(-reducing) coccus.

Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AM748925.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. mangrovi, of a mangrove, referring to the isolation of the type strain from a mangrove forest.
