Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. Thiobacter, sulfur rod.

Thiobacter subterraneus Hirayama et al. 2005, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) C55 = ATCC BAA-941 = DSM 16629 = JCM 12421.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB180657.
Etymology: L. masc. adj. subterraneus, underground, subterranean, indicating the source of isolation.
