Syntrophococcus Krumholz and Bryant 1986, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Syntrophococcus sucromutans Krumholz and Bryant 1986.
Etymology: Gr. prep. sun, together with; Gr. n. trophos, feeder, rearer; N.L. masc. n. coccus (from Gr. masc. n. kokkos), a grain, berry; N.L. masc. n. Syntrophococcus, coccus which feeds together with (another species).

Effective publication: KRUMHOLZ (L.R.) and BRYANT (M.P.): Syntrophococcus sucromutans sp. nov. gen. nov. uses carbohydrates as electron donors and formate, methoxymonobenzoids or Methanobrevibacter as electron acceptor systems. Arch. Microbiol., 1986, 143, 313-318.

Etymology: French n. sucre, sugar; L. part. adj. mutans, altering, changing, converting; N.L. part. adj. sucromutans, converting sugar.
