Type species: ¤ Petrothermobacter organivorans Tamazawa et al. 2017.
Etymology: Gr. n. petra, rock, stone; Gr. n. therme, heat; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Petrothermobacter, rod which grows in a high-temperature oil sandstone.
