Opitutus Chin et al. 2001, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Opitutales Choo et al. 2007; Type genus of the family ¤ Opitutaceae Choo et al. 2007).
Type species: ¤ Opitutus terrae Chin et al. 2001.
Etymology: L. fem. n. Ops Opis, a Roman Earth and harvest goddess; L. part. adj. tutus (from L. v. tueor), protected; N.L. masc. n. Opitutus, the one protected by Ops.
Valid publication: CHIN (K.J.), LIESACK (W.) and JANSSEN (P.H.): Opitutus terrae gen. nov., sp. nov., to accommodate novel strains of the division 'Verrucomicrobia' isolated from rice paddy soil. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol. 2001, 51, 1965-1968.

Opitutus terrae Chin et al. 2001, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) PB90-1 = DSM 11246 = JCM 15787.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ229235.
Etymology: L. gen. n. terrae, of the earth.
Valid publication: CHIN (K.J.), LIESACK (W.) and JANSSEN (P.H.): Opitutus terrae gen. nov., sp. nov., to accommodate novel strains of the division 'Verrucomicrobia' isolated from rice paddy soil. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol. 2001, 51, 1965-1968.

Note: At the time of publication, the type strain was not deposited in two publicly accessible service collections in different countries, and Opitutus terrae Chin et al. 2001 was not validly published [Rules 27(3) and 30]. However, according to the Judicial Opinion 81, Opitutus terrae Chin et al. 2001 is now considered to be validly published, since deposit in a second culture collection in a different country has been documented.
