Oleiphilus Golyshin et al. 2002, gen. nov. (Type genus of the family ¤ Oleiphilaceae Golyshin et al. 2002).
Type species: ¤ Oleiphilus messinensis Golyshin et al. 2002.
Etymology: L. n. oleum, oil; N.L. masc. adj. philus (from Gr. masc. adj. philos), friend, loving; N.L. masc. n. Oleiphilus, oil-loving organism.
Valid publication: GOLYSHIN (P.N.), CHERNIKOVA (T.N.), ABRAHAM (W.R.), LÜNSDORF (H.), TIMMIS (K.N.) and YAKIMOV (M.M.): Oleiphilaceae fam. nov., to include Oleiphilus messinensis gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel marine bacterium that obligately utilizes hydrocarbons. Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ295154.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. messinensis, pertaining to Messina, the city in Sicily where the organism was isolated.
