Type species: ¤ Hippea maritima Miroshnichenko et al. 1999.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Hippea, named after Hans Hippe, a German microbiologist, in recognition of his significant contribution to the characterization of new, obligately anaerobic procaryotes and the understanding of their physiology.

Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: FR754500.
Etymology: N.L. fem. gen. n. alviniae, of Alvin, named in honour of the HOVAlvin which collected the samples harbouring this strain.

Hippea jasoniae Flores et al. 2012, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) Mar08-272r = DSM 24585 = OCM 985.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: FR754498.
Etymology: N.L. fem. gen. n. jasoniae, of Jason, named in honour of the ROV Jason 2 which collected the samples harbouring this strain and has been essential in the exploration of deep-sea hydrothermal environments.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. maritima, of the sea, marine; i.e. inhabiting marine environments.
