Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Deinobacter Oyaizu et al. 1987, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Deinobacter grandis Oyaizu et al. 1987.
Etymology: Gr. adj. deinos (derived from a noun meaning fear, through the idea of forgetting the name of a fearful, i.e. strange), strange or unusual; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Deinobacter, unusual rod.
Valid publication: OYAIZU (H.), STACKEBRANDT (E.), SCHLEIFER (K.H.), LUDWIG (W.), POHLA (H.), ITO (H.), HIRATA (A.), OYAIZU (Y.) and KOMAGATA (K.): A radiation-resistant rod-shaped bacterium, Deinobacter grandis gen. nov., sp. nov., with peptidoglycan containing ornithine. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1987, 37, 62-67.

¤ Deinococcus Brooks and Murray 1981.

Note: Rainey et al. 1997 propose to transfer ¤ Deinobacter grandis Oyaizu et al. 1987 (the type species of the genus Deinobacter) to the genus ¤ Deinococcus as ¤ Deinococcus grandis (Oyaizu et al. 1987) Rainey et al. 1997, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Deinobacter to ¤ Deinococcus.
