Type species: ¤ Balnearium lithotrophicum Takai et al. 2003.
Etymology: N.L. neut. subst. from L. neut. adj. balnearium, pertaining to a bath.
Valid publication: TAKAI (K.), NAKAGAWA (S.), SAKO (Y.) and HORIKOSHI (K.): Balnearium lithotrophicum gen. nov., sp. nov., a novel thermophilic, strictly anaerobic, hydrogen-oxidizing chemolithoautotroph isolated from a black smoker chimney in the Suiyo Seamount hydrothermal system. Balnearium lithotrophicum Takai et al. 2003, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) 17S = ATCC BAA-736 = JCM 11970.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AB105049.
Etymology: Gr. n. lithos, stone; Gr. adj. trophikos, nursing, tending or feeding; N.L. neut. adj. lithotrophicum, referring to its lithotrophic metabolism.
