Note: According to Willems et al. 1991, Aquaspirillum aquaticum Hylemon et al. 1973 (Approved Lists 1980) and ¤ Comamonas terrigena (ex Hugh 1962) De Vos et al. 1985 should be regarded as a single species. The genus name Comamonas (ex Davis and Park 1962) De Vos et al. 1985 and the specific epithet terrigena have precedence over the genus name Aquaspirillum Hylemon et al. 1973 and the specific epithet aquaticum.

¤ Comamonas aquatica (Hylemon et al. 1973) Wauters et al. 2003, comb. nov.

Note: The species ¤ Comamonas terrigena (ex Hugh 1962) De Vos et al. 1985 encompasses three clusters on the basis of DNA-rRNA and DNA-DNA hybridization data, and of protein electrophoretic patterns and immunotyping. These three groups can also be differentiated phenotypically from each other. Wauters et al. 2003 propose to rename Comamonas terrigena DNA group 2 [containing former Aquaspirillum aquaticum Hylemon et al. 1973 (Approved Lists 1980)] as ¤ Comamonas aquatica comb. nov.
