Type species: ¤ Zymomonas mobilis (Lindner 1928) Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. zumê, leaven, ferment; Gr. fem. n. monas, a unit, monad; N.L. fem. n. Zymomonas, intended to mean fermenting monad.
