Xanthobacter Wiegel et al. 1978, genus. (Type genus of the family ¤ Xanthobacteraceae Lee et al. 2005).
Type species: ¤ Xanthobacter autotrophicus (Baumgarten et al. 1974) Wiegel et al. 1978 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. adj. xanthos, yellow; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod, staff; N.L. masc. n. Xanthobacter, yellow rod.

Etymology: Gr. pref. autos, self; N.L. adj. trophicus (from Gr. adj. trophikos), nursing, tending or feeding; N.L. masc. adj. autotrophicus, self feeding, referring to the ability of the organism to use CO2 as a sole carbon source.
