Type species: ¤ Vulcanisaeta distributa Itoh et al. 2002.
Etymology: L. adj. vulcanius, belonging to Vulcan (the god of fire), intended to mean volcanic; L. fem. n. saeta, stiff hair; N.L. fem. n. Vulcanisaeta, a rigid rod inhabiting volcanic hot springs.

Etymology: L. fem. part. adj. distributa (from L. v. distribuo), distributed, referring to the wide distribution of strains.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. souniana, pertaining to Hojo Soun, a historical feudal lord after whom Sounzan, the place of isolation, was named.
