Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Thiosphaera Robertson and Kuenen 1984, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Thiosphaera pantotropha Robertson and Kuenen 1984.
Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; L. fem. n. sphaera, sphere; N.L. fem. n. Thiosphaera, sulfur sphere.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 13. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1984, 34, 91-92.
Effective publication: ROBERTSON (L.A.) and KUENEN (J.G.): Thiosphaera pantotropha gen. nov., sp. nov., a facultatively anaerobic, facultatively autotrophic sulphur bacterium. J. Gen. Microbiol., 1983, 129, 2847-2855.
Validation List no. 13 in IJSEM Online - Effective publication Online

¤ Paracoccus Davis 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Ludwig et al. 1993.

Note: According to Ludwig et al. 1993, ¤ Thiosphaera pantotropha Robertson and Kuenen 1984 (the type species of the genus Thiosphaera) is a later heterotypic synonym of ¤ Paracoccus denitrificans (Beijerinck and Minkman 1910) Davis 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Ludwig et al. 1993. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Thiosphaera to ¤ Paracoccus.

Thiosphaera pantotropha Robertson and Kuenen 1984, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) GB17 = ATCC 35512= DSM 2944 = JCM 21485 = NCCB 82005 (formerly LMD 82.5).
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: Y16933.
Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. pantotropha (from Gr.  pantotrophos), omnivorous.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 13. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1984, 34, 91-92.
Effective publication: ROBERTSON (L.A.) and KUENEN (J.G.): Thiosphaera pantotropha gen. nov., sp. nov., a facultatively anaerobic, facultatively autotrophic sulphur bacterium. J. Gen. Microbiol., 1983, 129, 2847-2855.

¤ Paracoccus pantotrophus (Robertson and Kuenen 1984) Rainey et al. 1999, comb. nov.

Note: Comparison of both 16S rRNA coding sequences and DNA-DNA hybridization of ten strains classified as strains of ¤ Paracoccus denitrificans (Beijerinck and Minkman 1910) Davis 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Ludwig et al. 1993 has shown that they fall into two groups which are distinct from each other at the species level. One group (group A) comprises the type strain of Paracoccus denitrificans (ATCC 17741. Group B comprises the strain ATCC 35512(the original type strain of Thiosphaera pantotropha Robertson and Kuenen 1984). In light of these findings, Rainey et al. 1999 propose that 1) strains of group A are retained as Paracoccus denitrificans, with strain ATCC 17741= NCCB 22021 (formerly LMD 22.21) = DSM 413 as the type strain; and 2) all strains of group B are assigned to the new combination ¤ Paracoccus pantotrophus (Robertson and Kuenen 1984) Rainey et al. 1999 with strain ATCC 35512= NCCB 82005 (formerly LMD 82.5) as the type strain. The emendation of the species description [Paracoccus denitrificans (Beijerinck and Minkman 1910) Davis 1969 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Ludwig et al. 1993] must now be deleted.
