Type species: ¤ Thiomargarita namibiensis Schulz et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. n. theion (Latin transliteration thium), sulfur; L. fem. n. margarita, pearl; N.L. fem. n. Thiomargarita, sulfur pearl.
