Synonyms: Includes "Thiothece" Winogradsky 1888, "Thiosphaera" Miyoshi 1897.

Etymology: N.L. fem. adj. chemoclinalis, pertaining to chemocline, found to inhabit environments with steep physico-chemical gradients, isolated from the chemocline of a meromictic freshwater lake.
