Type species: ¤ Subsaximicrobium wynnwilliamsii Bowman and Nichols 2005.
Etymology: L. pref. sub, below; L. neut. n. saxum, stone; N.L. neut. n. microbium, microbe; N.L. neut. n. Subsaximicrobium, microbe living below stone.
Valid publication: BOWMAN (J.P.) and NICHOLS (D.S.): Novel members of the family Flavobacteriaceae from Antarctic maritime habitats including Subsaximicrobium wynnwilliamsii gen. nov., sp. nov., Subsaximicrobium saxinquilinus sp. nov., Subsaxibacter broadyi gen. nov., sp. nov., Lacinutrix copepodicola gen. nov., sp. nov., and novel species of the genera Bizionia, Gelidibacter and Gillisia. Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AY693998.
Etymology: L. neut. n. saxum, stone; L. masc. n. inquilinus, the denizen; N.L. masc. n. saxinquilinus, the denizen of stone.

Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. wynnwilliamsii, of Wynn-Williams, named in honour of D.D. Wynn-Williams, Bristish Antarctic microbiologist.
