Etymology: Gr. n. spora, seed; Gr. n. hals halos, salt; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a staff or rod; N.L. masc. n. Sporohalobacter, spore-producing salt rod.

Etymology: N.L. gen. n. lortetii, of Lortet,  named after M.L. Lortet, a French microbiologist.
