Etymology: N.L. n. sphingosinum (from Gr. gen. n. sphingos, of sphinx, and suff. -ine), sphingosine; N.L. pref. sphingo-, pertaining to sphingosine; N.L. neut. n. microbium, microbe; N.L. neut. n. Sphingomicrobium, a sphingosine-containing microbe.
