Type species: ¤ Sneathia sanguinegens Collins et al. 2002.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Sneathia, named after the British microbiologist Peter H.A. Sneath, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to microbial systematics.

Etymology: L. n. sanguis -inis, blood; L. part adj. egens, needing, being in need; N.L part. adj sanguinegens, needing blood; because the organism requires blood or serum.
