Etymology: L. n. sal salis, salt; N.L. neut. n. archaeum (from Gr. adj. archaios, ancient), ancient one, archaeon; N.L. neut. n. Salarchaeum, salt-requiring archaeon.

Etymology: N.L. neut. adj. japonicum, Japanese, pertaining to Japan, referring to the place of isolation of the type strain.
