Type species: ¤ Prosthecomicrobium pneumaticum Staley 1968 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. fem. n. prosthêkê, appendage; N.L. neut. n. microbium, microbe; N.L. neut. n. Prosthecomicrobium, appendage (-bearing) microbe.

Type strain: strain 11 = CCM 7594 = VKM B-2498.

Etymology: L. part. neut. adj. consociatum, associated; intended to mean growth in a community with cellulose degrading bacteria.
