Etymology: Gr. adj. polus, many, numerous; L. masc. n. nucleus, a little nut, kernel; N.L. masc. n. bacter, a rod; N.L. masc. n. polynucleobacter, the rod (bacterium) with many nucleoids.

Etymology: N.L. n. acidum (from L. adj. acidus, sour) an acid; Gr. suff. -phobos (from Gr. n. phobos, panic fear) having a horror; N.L. masc. adj. acidiphobus, acid-hating, referring to the observation that this species was never detected in acidic waters.
