Peredibacter Davidov and Jurkevitch 2004, gen. nov. (Tpe genus of the family ¤ Peredibacteraceae Piñeiro et al. 2008).
Type species: ¤ Peredibacter starrii (Seidler et al. 1972) Davidov and Jurkevitch 2004.
Etymology: L. v. peredere, to eat up, to devour; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Peredibacter, bacterium-devourer.

Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AF084852.
Basonym: ¤ Bdellovibrio starrii Seidler et al. 1972 (Approved Lists 1980).
Other synonym: ¤ Bacteriovorax starrii (Seidler et al. 1972) Baer et al. 2000.
Etymology: N.L. gen. masc. n. starrii, of Starr, named after M.P. Starr, an investigator of the bdellovibrios.
