Etymology: N.L. n. methanum [from French n. méth(yle) and chemical suffix -ane], methane; N.L. pref. methano-, pertaining to methane; L. adj. brevis, short; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod, staff; N.L. masc. n. Methanobrevibacter, short methane (-producing) rod.

Note: Balch et al. transferred the species ¤ Methanobacterium arbophilicum to the genus Methanobrevibacter as Methanobrevibacter arboriphilus [1]. The epithet arboriphilus has been erroneously corrected by the Lists Editor of the IJSB who created the new wrong epithet, arboriphilicus [2]. However, the correct form of the epithet (arboriphilus) was reestablished by Asakawa et al. [3].
