Etymology: N.L. fem. dim. n. Lewinella, named after Professor Ralph Lewin, who first isolated these organisms.

Etymology: Malayan n. agar, agar, gelling polysaccharides from seaweed; N.L. n. agarum, agar; N.L. adj. lyticus -a -um (from Gr. adj. lutikos -ê -on), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. fem. adj. agarilytica, agar-dissolving.
