Lactosphaera Janssen et al. 1995, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Lactosphaera pasteurii (Schink 1985) Janssen et al. 1995.
Etymology: L. n. lac lactis, milk; L. fem. n. sphaera, a sphere; N.L. fem. n. Lactosphaera, a sphere with lactic acid fermentation.
Valid publication: JANSSEN (P.H.), EVERS (S.), RAINEY (F.A.), WEISS (N.), LUDWIG (W.), HARFOOT (C.G.) and SCHINK (B.): Lactosphaera gen. nov., a new genus of lactic acid bacteria, and transfer of Ruminococcus pasteurii Schink 1984 to Lactosphaera pasteurii comb. nov. ¤ Trichococcus Scheff et al. 1984 emend. Liu et al. 2002.

Note: Liu et al. 2002 propose to transfer ¤ Lactosphaera pasteurii (Schink 1985) Janssen et al. 1995 (the type species of the genus Lactosphaera) to the genus ¤ Trichococcus as ¤ Trichococcus pasteurii (Schink 1985) Liu et al. 2002, comb. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Lactosphaera to ¤ Trichococcus.
