Type species: ¤ Hespellia stercorisuis Whitehead et al. 2004.
Etymology: N.L. fem. n. Hespellia, named in honour of the American microbiologist Robert B. Hespell, in recognition of his many contributions to anaerobic microbiology.
Valid publication: WHITEHEAD (T.R.), COTTA (M.A.), COLLINS (M.D.) and LAWSON (P.A.): Hespellia stercorisuis gen. nov., sp. nov. and Hespellia porcina sp. nov., isolated from swine manure storage pits. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2004, 54, 241-245.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. porcina, of a pig, pertaining to a pig.
