Type species: ¤ Helcococcus kunzii Collins et al. 1993.
Etymology: Gr. n. helkos, wound; N.L. masc. n. coccus (Gr. mas. n. kokkos), berry; N.L. masc. n. Helcococcus, a coccus found in wounds.

Helcococcus kunzii Collins et al. 1993, sp. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) n°. 22 = ATCC 51366= CCUG 32213 = CIP 103932 = DSM 10548 = IFO (now NBRC) 15552 = LMG 15123 = NCIMB 702900 (formerly NCFB 2900).
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X69837.
Etymology: N.L. gen. n. kunzii, of Kunz, named after Lawrence J. Kunz, an American bacteriologist.

Etymology: L. gen. n. ovis, of a sheep.

Helcococcus sueciensis Collins et al. 2004, sp. nov.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. sueciensis, from Sweden, pertaining to Sweden, the country in which the organisms was isolated.
