Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; L. fem. n. pila, pillar; N.L. fem. n. Desulfopila, a sulfate-reducing pillar.

Etymology: L. fem. adj. inferna, that which is, or comes from, below, referring to the isolation of the type strain from a subsurface sediment.
