Etymology: L. pref. de, from; L. n. sulfur, sulfur; N.L. pref. desulfo-, desulfuricating, a prefix used to characterize a dissimilatory sulfate-reducing prokaryote; L. masc. n. carbo, coal; N.L. masc. n. Desulfocarbo, a sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from a coal bed.

Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. indianensis, pertaining to the state of Indiana, USA, where the type strain was isolated.
