Deferribacter Greene et al. 1997, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Deferribacterales Huber and Stetter 2002; type genus of the family ¤ Deferribacteraceae Huber and Stetter 2002).
Type species: ¤ Deferribacter thermophilus Greene et al. 1997.
Etymology: L. pref. de-, from; L. n. ferrum, iron; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Deferribacter, rod that reduces iron.

Etymology: L. gen. n. abyssi, of immense depths, living in the depths of the ocean.
