Coprothermobacter Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, gen. nov.
Type species: ¤ Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993.
Etymology: Gr. n. kopros, excrement, ordure, manure; Gr. adj. thermos, warm; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Coprothermobacter, a thermophilic rod from manure.
Valid publication: RAINEY (F.A.) and STACKEBRANDT (E.): Transfer of the type species of the genus Thermobacteroides to the genus Thermoanaerobacter as Thermoanaerobacter acetoethylicus (Ben-Bassat and Zeikus 1981) comb. nov., description of Coprothermobacter gen. nov., and reclassification of Thermobacteroides proteolyticus as Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) comb. nov. Coprothermobacter platensis Etchebehere et al. 1998, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) 3R = DSM 11748.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: Y08935.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. platensis, pertaining to Rio de la Plata, a river between Uruguay and Argentina, the region where the strain was isolated.
Valid publication: ETCHEBEHERE (C.), PAVAN (M.E.), ZORZÓPULOS (J.), SOUBES (M.) and MUXÍ (L.): Coprothermobacter platensis sp. nov., a new anaerobic proteolytic thermophilic bacterium isolated from an anaerobic mesophilic sludge. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1998, 48, 1297-1304.

Coprothermobacter proteolyticus (Ollivier et al. 1985) Rainey and Stackebrandt 1993, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) BT = ATCC 35245= DSM 5265.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: X69335.
Basonym: ¤ Thermobacteroides proteolyticus Ollivier et al. 1985.
Etymology: Gr. n. proteios (from Gr. adj. protos, first), the first quality (protos was used by Gerhard Johan Mulder in 1838 to coin the French n. protéine); N.L. masc. adj. lyticus (from Gr. masc. adj. lutikos), able to loosen, able to dissolve; N.L. masc. adj. proteolyticus, proteolytic.
