Archaeoglobus Stetter 1988, gen. nov. (Type genus of the order ¤ Archaeoglobales Huber and Stetter 2002; type genus of the family ¤ Archaeoglobaceae Huber and Stetter 2002).
Type species: ¤ Archaeoglobus fulgidus Stetter 1988.
Etymology: Gr. masc. adj. archaios (Latin transliteration archaeos), ancient; L. masc. n. globus, sphere; N.L. masc. n. Archaeoglobus, the ancient sphere.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. infectus, incomplete, pertaining to the requirement for acetate and coenzyme M for growth.

Etymology: N.L. n. sulfas -atis, sulfate; L. masc. adj. callidus, skilful; N.L. masc. adj. sulfaticallidus, skilful with sulfate, referring to the strain's capability of both chemolithoautotrophic and chemo-organotrophic growth on sulfate.

Archaeoglobus veneficus Huber et al. 1998, sp. nov.
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) SNP6 = DSM 11195.

Etymology: L. masc. n. veneficus, the poisoner, intended to mean the poison mixer, to give credit to its ability to convert one toxic compound (sulfite) into another (sulfide).
