Type species: ¤ Anaeroarcus burkinensis corrig. (Ouattara et al. 1992) Strömpl et al. 1999.
Etymology: Gr. pref. an, not; Gr. n. aer aeros, air; L. masc. n. arcus, a bow, arc; N.L. masc. n. Anaeroarcus, a bow not living in air.

Anaeroarcus burkinensis corrig. (Ouattara et al. 1992) Strömpl et al. 1999, comb. nov. (Type species of the genus.)
Type strain: (see also StrainInfo.net) B4B0 = ATCC 51455= CIP 105409 = DSM 6283.
Sequence accession no. (16S rRNA gene) for the type strain: AJ010961.
Basonym: ¤ Anaerovibrio burkinabensis Ouattara et al. 1992.
Etymology: N.L. masc. adj. burkinensis, pertaining to Burkina Faso, the place from which the organism was isolated.

Note: The specific epithet burkinabensis (sic) has been corrected because the Latin suffix -ensis is used only to indicate geographic locations, not the inhabitants (the etymology of the epithet burkinabensis, given by Ouattara et al. 1992 (see: ¤), was N.L. adj. burkinabensis, from Burkinabe, inhabitants of Burkina Faso, West Africa).
