Type species: ¤ Alkanibacter difficilis Friedrich and Lipski 2008.
Etymology: N.L. n. alkanum, saturated hydrocarbon; N.L. masc. n. bacter, rod; N.L. masc. n. Alkanibacter, rod assimilating alkanes.
Valid publication: FRIEDRICH (M.M.) and LIPSKI (A.): Alkanibacter difficilis gen. nov., sp. nov. and Singularimonas variicoloris gen. nov., sp. nov., hexane-degrading bacteria isolated from a hexane-treated biofilter. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2008, 58, 2324-2329.

Etymology: L. masc. adj. difficilis, difficult, because it is difficult to cultivate.
