Type species: ¤ Alkalitalea saponilacus Zhao and Chen 2012.
Etymology: N.L. n. alkali (from Arabic article al, the; Arabic n. qaliy, ashes of saltwort), alkali; L. fem. n. talea, a rod; N.L. fem. n. Alkalitalea, a rod living in basic surroundings.
Valid publication: ZHAO (B.) and CHEN (S.): Alkalitalea saponilacus gen. nov., sp. nov., an obligately anaerobic, alkaliphilic, xylanolytic bacterium from a meromictic soda lake. Int. J. Syst. Evol. Microbiol., 2012, 62, 2618-2623.

Etymology: L. n. sapo -onis, soap; L. n. lacus -us, a lake; N.L. gen. n. saponilacus, from Soap Lake, WA, USA, where the type strain was isolated.
