Classification (Warning: see also the file "Classification of prokaryotes: Introduction").

Actinosporangium Krasil'nikov and Yuan 1961, genus.
Type species: ¤ Actinosporangium violaceum Krasil'nikov and Yuan 1961 (Approved Lists 1980).
Etymology: Gr. n. aktis -inos, ray (used to refer to actinomycetes); N.L. n. sporangium [from Gr. n. spora, a seed (and in biology a spore), and Gr. n. angeion (Latin transliteration angium), vessel], sporangium; N.L. neut. n. Actinosporangium, an actinomyces with sporangium.
Approved Lists reference: SKERMAN (V.B.D.), McGOWAN (V.) and SNEATH (P.H.A.) (editors): Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1980, 30, 225-420 (Approved Lists of Bacterial Names in IJSEM Online - Approved Lists of Bacterial Names Amended edition).
Original publication: KRASIL'NIKOV (N.A.) and YUAN (C.S.): Actinosporangium, a new genus of the family Actinoplanaceae. Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR Seriya Biologicheskaya, 1961, 8, 113-116.

¤ Streptomyces Waksman and Henrici 1943 (Approved Lists 1980).

Note: Goodfellow et al. 1986 propose to transfer ¤ Actinosporangium violaceum Krasil'nikov and Yuan 1961 (Approved Lists 1980), the type species of the genus Actinosporangium, to the genus Streptomyces as ¤ Streptomyces paradoxus Goodfellow et al. 1986, nom. nov. According to Rule 37a, bacteriologists adhering to this proposal must change the name Actinosporangium to ¤ Streptomyces.
Valid publication: Validation List no. 22. Int. J. Syst. Bacteriol., 1986, 36, 573-576.
Effective publication: GOODFELLOW (M.), WILLIAMS (S.T.) and ALDERSON (G.): Transfer of Actinosporangium violaceum Krasil'nikov and Yuan, Actinosporangium vitaminophilum Shomura et al. and Actinopycnidium caeruleum Krasil'nikov to the genus Streptomyces with amended descriptions of the species. Syst. Appl. Microbiol., 1986, 8, 61-64.
