Acholeplasma Edward and Freundt 1970, genus. (Type genus of the order ¤ Acholeplasmatales Freundt et al. 1984; type genus of the family ¤ Acholeplasmataceae Edward and Freundt 1970 [Approved Lists 1980]).
Type species: ¤ Acholeplasma laidlawii (Freundt 1955) Edward and Freundt 1970 (Approved Lists 1980).
Synonym: "Sapromyces" Sabin 1941.
Etymology: Gr. pref. a-, not, without; Gr. n. cholê, bile; Gr. neut. n. plasma, anything formed or moulded, image, figure; N.L. neut. n. Acholeplasma, intended to mean that cholesterol, a constituent of bile, is not required.
